The New Jones Act - U.S.C. Title 46 (H.R. 1442)
EFFECTIVE OCTOBER 6, 2006
New Jones Act laws were passed by the U.S. Congress and signed by President George W. Bush on October 6, 2006. The old Jones Act was re-codified by The Office of the Law Revision Counsel. The changes to the act were the result of positive law codification which is the process of preparing and enacting a revision and restatement of the general and permanent laws of the United States. This is done one title at a time.
Many of the general and permanent laws of the United States Code are inconsistent, redundant and obsolete, so the Office of the Law Revision Counsel of the House of Representatives is currently engaged in a comprehensive project of revising those laws. In a way it is a process of simplifying the old laws to comply with today's government.
The Jones Act protects injured Seaman and their rights to hold negligent parties responsible for their injuries. Please read our Jones Act page for more information.
